HIM 270 - ICD-10 Coding5 Credit(s)
Students gain a working knowledge of ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding with exposure in abstracting and identifying correct diagnosis codes per guidelines and utilize Encoder programs.
Prerequisite: HIM 114 with a grade of C or better. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Summarize the characteristics of the ICD-10-CM classification system
- Describe the format of the Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries
- Identify and define the chapters and sub chapters or blocks used in ICD-10-CM
- Express what the main terms, subterms, carryover lines, nonessential modifiers, and eponyms are that are used in ICD-10-CM
- Recognize the contents of the Appendices of ICD-10-CM
- Explain the format of the Alphabetic Index to Diseases in ICD-10-CM
- Demonstrate an understanding of the use of the cross-reference terms and instructional notes used in ICD-10-CM
- Describe the rules for multiple coding
- Explain how connecting words are used in the Alphabetic Index
- Apply the symbols, punctuation, and abbreviations used to code in ICD-10-CM
- List the basic steps in ICD-10-CM coding
- Assign diagnosis codes using the Alphabetic Index and Tabular List
