ED 230 - Language and Literacy

Literacy is essential to learning. Understanding the process of literacy development in middle and high school prepares teachers to become better equipped at helping to improve literacy skills of students of all backgrounds. Students will review influential, popular and diverse works for adolescence. The culminating assignment includes the creation of a personal narrative, written to encompass components of story and theory behind the integration and use of first person voice.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand the prerequisites and requirements for completing undergraduate and graduate degrees in education (K-5) or in subject areas (6-12) and how to pursue these degrees.

2. Determine both educational and career goals based upon self-assessment, interests, and skills as well as upon likely job openings in education.

3. Demonstrate skills in using technology both to learn and to teach.

4. Demonstrate improved writing and reading skills and the ability to teach others to write and to read with fluency.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of intrinsic motivation and how to nurture this though the use of precise praise.

6. Demonstrate an understanding of cultural diversity and how to support diverse students as a classroom teacher.
